For example, codes starting with "1xx" mean the device has received the message and is processing it, while codes beginning with "2xx" indicate that the operation is completed. Codes starting with "3xx" are used for redirects, while "4xx" indicates authentication errors, and so on. 

The most common code is "200," which means the action was successfully completed without needing additional details. 

SIP messages, whether requests or responses, are generally concise, containing only a few lines that outline the call's specifics.

Roles of SIP Protocol 

  • Call Reception: SIP handles the initial request when a call is started, and the phone operator responds to the call. 

  • Establishing the Connection: SIP finds the person to be contacted and connects them, similar to how a phone operator connects the call to the desired destination. This may involve using a redirect server to route the call to the correct address using IP protocol. 

  • Call Management: SIP manages call signals, such as mute, pause, transfer, much like a phone operator would handle multiple aspects of the call. 

  • Call Termination: SIP terminates the call, just like the phone operator would hang up the call.
