In this guide, we will learn step by step how to prioritize VoIP traffic using QoS on the Vigor router to ensure improved call quality and stability within the network.
VoIP calls (Voice over Internet Protocol) are services that are highly sensitive to time delay. Although VoIP traffic does not consume large amounts of bandwidth, any slight delay or interruption can significantly affect voice quality, causing problems such as choppy sound or dropped calls.
To ensure excellent call quality, the DrayTek Vigor router provides a powerful feature to give high priority to VoIP traffic. This allows the router to automatically reserve dedicated bandwidth for calls and reduce the impact of other data traffic (such as downloads or browsing) on them.
VoIP calls (whether via IP Phone, PBX, or Softphone) are extremely sensitive to the following factors:
Latency: Causes delayed voice.
Jitter: Leads to choppy or broken sound.
Packet Loss: Causes call drops or distortion.
Therefore, SIP traffic (for signaling) and RTP traffic (for the actual voice) must be given higher priority than the rest of the network traffic.
Step 1: Enable QoS on the WAN Interface Used for VoIP
Log in to the router’s web interface and navigate to:
Bandwidth Management >> Quality of Service
Check the ✓ box next to Enable for the WAN interface through which VoIP traffic passes.
Enter the actual connection speeds:
Inbound (Download)
Outbound (Upload)
Important Note: Enter the actual speeds (not the theoretical ones) because the router relies on them to accurately calculate and allocate bandwidth. If the WAN is DSL type, make sure to set the speed correctly according to your service provider’s settings.
At the bottom of the same page (in the VoIP Prioritisation section):
Check the ✓ box next to Enable the First Priority for VoIP SIP/RTP. (This feature gives SIP traffic and RTP voice packets absolute priority).
If your SIP server does not use the default port 5060, enter the correct port number in the SIP UDP Port field.
In this simple way, the DrayTek Vigor router automatically detects VoIP calls through SIP packets, then associates them with the corresponding RTP packets (voice), and gives them first priority. When this feature is enabled, the router typically reserves about 2 × 88 kbps for each call and can dynamically adjust the reservation according to call quality.
Click on the green Status icon next to the interface.
You will see the status of each active call along with analytical graphs showing call quality (Latency, Jitter, Packet Loss).
When the router detects an active VoIP call, the following message will appear in the system log:
"VoIP calls detected"
You can monitor these messages through System Maintenance >> Syslog/Mail Alert or by using an external Syslog program.
To improve QoS performance and VoIP call stability on your DrayTek Vigor router, follow these guidelines:
Make sure to update the router’s firmware to the latest version to get the best support for the VoIP QoS feature.
If you are making multiple calls at the same time, monitor the dynamic bandwidth reservation.
In some advanced cases, you can add manual rules for RTP ports if necessary, but the “First Priority” feature is sufficient in most scenarios.
Avoid running heavy applications (such as large downloads) on the same WAN without QoS enabled.
