A Comprehensive Guide to Configuring QoS Settings on DrayTek Vigor Router

With the increasing variety of network uses in any company or even in homes—such as VoIP calls, video conferencing, and file downloads—it becomes essential to control how internet speed is distributed among these activities. This is where the QoS (Quality of Service) feature becomes important. It allows you to set priorities for network traffic to ensure that critical applications run smoothly without delay or interruption.

In this guide, we will explain practically how to configure QoS settings on your DrayTek Vigor router to improve network performance, distribute bandwidth efficiently, and achieve a more stable and professional user experience.

What is QoS Technology and How Does It Work?

Quality of Service (QoS) is one of the most important features in networking devices. It is used to give priority to specific types of data traffic to ensure that latency-sensitive applications—such as VoIP calls and video conferencing (Zoom, Teams, Webex)—operate completely smoothly without stuttering or delay.

QoS works by intelligently managing bandwidth. It sends important data first, while giving lower-priority applications only the remaining capacity.

DrayTek Vigor routers support three main classes within the QoS settings:

  • Class 1 → Highest priority

  • Class 2 → Medium priority

  • Class 3 → Lowest priority

Any data traffic that does not belong to any of these three classes is automatically classified under the "Other" category.

Steps to Configure QoS on DrayTek Vigor Router

Step 1: Determine the Actual Internet Speed (WAN Bandwidth)

In the case of using an Ethernet WAN connection, the router cannot know the real internet speed if it is lower than the port speed. Since QoS relies heavily on the actual speed to distribute bandwidth correctly, you must enter it manually.

  • Open speedtest.net in your browser and click GO to measure the Download and Upload speeds.
  • Record the speeds in kilobits per second (Kbps).

Log in to the router’s web interface:

  1. Go to Bandwidth Management >> Quality of Service.
  2. Select the WAN interface you want to configure.
  3. Enter the Inbound (Download) and Outbound (Upload) speeds you obtained from Speedtest.
  4. Click OK to save the settings.

Note: Make sure to enter the speeds accurately, as any error here will negatively affect the effectiveness of QoS on your DrayTek Vigor router.

Step 2: Create Traffic Classification Rules (Set the QoS Rule)

The network administrator can create classification rules (Class Rules) based on several criteria, such as:

  • Source or destination IP address

  • Service Type (e.g., VoIP, HTTP, HTTPS, RTP)

  • Port number

  • Protocol (TCP/UDP)

  • Application (in models that support App QoS)

How to set it up:

  • Go to Bandwidth Management >> Quality of Service.
  • Click Add to create a new classification rule.

  • Enable the Enable option.
  • Name the rule and select the desired class (Class 1, 2, or 3).
  • Add the required conditions (for example: route all VoIP traffic to Class 1).
  • Save the rule.

The new rule will appear in the Class Rule list.

Step 3: Set the Percentage for Each Class

After creating the rules, you must specify the percentage for each of the three classes:

  • Enter the desired percentage for each Class (e.g., Class 1 = 40%, Class 2 = 30%, Class 3 = 20%).
  • The router will automatically allocate the remaining percentage to the "Other" class.
  • The total percentages must not exceed 100%.

Note: The highest priority class (Class 1) will receive its share first whenever there is traffic belonging to it.

Checking the Settings

After completing the configuration, you can click the Status or Monitor button to view real-time bandwidth consumption for each class and see how traffic is being distributed on your DrayTek Vigor router.

Additional Tips for Better Performance on DrayTek Vigor Router

By following these tips, you will achieve more stable and efficient performance with your DrayTek Vigor router:

  • Enable the built-in VoIP QoS if you are using VoIP phones (some models have a dedicated option for this).

  • Test the settings while making a VoIP call or video conference during large file downloads.

  • In newer models, you can use APP QoS to automatically classify applications.

By following these steps, you will achieve stable and reliable performance for latency-sensitive applications on your network using your DrayTek Vigor router.

Conclusion

By following these simple and clear steps, you can activate the QoS feature with high efficiency on your DrayTek Vigor router, transforming your network from a congestion-prone environment into a stable and reliable one.

Whether you manage an office, a small company, or even a large home network, setting up QoS correctly will save you a lot of frustration caused by call drops or slow meetings.
